Twinkle, Twinkle, Tommy
Below is a link to my son’s first violin recital. He performed two songs, both of which are variations on “Twinkle, Twinkle”. I didn’t even know these variations existed before he began practicing them.
The thought occurred to me that I should share the story of how he was inspired to play the violin. Perhaps if you are so inclined to inspire a young person, you might want a Jaime Jorge CD or DVD to give as a gift. Then I thought, hey, if you’d be so kind as to click a little affiliate link, we’d get a small contribution to help underwrite the cost of more violin lessons for Tommy. So I’ll provide the link after I share the story.
We attended a Jaime Jorge concert in December or early January of 2008. My son paid very close attention to Jaime Jorge as he played songs and shared words from his heart.
After we returned home and after a good nights sleep, Tommy decided to play the Jaime Jorge DVD we purchased. He watched it. Then he played it again, but this time he had a ruler under his chin and a round cylindrical piece of wood that was moving to Jaime’s movements (and the music of course). I thought for sure he’d get a sliver or something.
Anyway, he was pretty sure he could play as good as Mr. Jorge. At seven-and-a-half, that’s probably okay, but we didn’t let it go without a challenge.
Anyway, we started talking to a friend at Church about Tommy’s rapt interest in the violin. Teacher Joy began lessons with Tommy ten weeks before his first recital. I can tell you that the boy has more musical talent that his parents put together. I am not saying he’s going to be some big name, but I am not worried about that. Character formation is far more important to me than any of that concern.
Anyway, here is the link to the recital of Thomas Daniel Mayhew, age 7.5 (don’t forget the half at this stage - it is super important)…

Please feel free to pass along a link to Tommy’s short story if you think it might stoke musical interest in someone. When it comes to music and much in life, I believe in inspiration over force every time. Forcing music lessons breeds rebellion. If you think about it or talk to enough people, you’ll sense it or know it outright.
So here is a link to listen to portions of select songs and purchase Jaime Jorge’s and many other fine artists CD’s and DVD’s…
