Crimson TidBit - Electrolysis in the Oral Environment

This Crimson TidBit jumps back into the mouth. This time, by focusing on the electrical currents therein.

This may strike you as bizarre. That is, to be talking about electrical currents in the mouth. But, I assure you, it’s anything but bizarre. It is an important fact you will want to know more about.

Here’s a quote that applies to adjacent fillings or filling/crown combinations where dissimilar metals are used in the oral cavity…

“Usually the dissimilar metals creating electrical currents are silver dental amalgam and cast gold, since a large electrochemical potential difference exists between these metals. However, a galvanized current has also been reported between a single amalgam and saliva, between amalgam and the metal frame of a partial
denture, and between two gold restorations.

The restorations act as electrodes, and the saliva or other oral fluids act as electrolytes. Once an electrical potential is created, the “oral electric cell” short circuits, sending a stimulus to the tooth that the patient can feel as a shock, tooth pain, or metallic taste.

The phenomenon underscores the hidden hazards not just of mercury amalgam, but of gold and other metals in the mouth. As one dental researcher wrote:

Often, the DC current levels in the mouth of a patient with both silver-mercury and gold materials exceed that of the 60 mvolt firing threshold for single nerve fibers.

These constant levels in excess of the normal energies of the nervous system must produce a severe distortion of the electromagnetic fields of the brain, especially since the trigeminal nerve is in direct communication with dental materials.”
