I suffered with canker sores pretty bad for a time.  During my teenage years, I used alum (which I don’t recommend), but it did work well for me.  Alum, an astringent, has a form of aluminum in it, which is precisely why I don’t recommend it now.  Aluminum is linked to Alzheimer’s.  That sure wouldn’t be a pleasant unintended side effect, would it?
